Susan's Encounter with the Mountain Guardian

For eight years, Susan had been a dedicated jogger, traversing the familiar mountain trails behind her home. Every morning, she laced up her running shoes and ventured into the serene wilderness, where she had become well-acquainted with the local fauna and flora. It was a routine she cherished, a communion with nature.
One crisp morning, the air filled with the promise of a new day, Susan set out on her usual route. These mountains were her sanctuary, and she felt safe in the knowledge of the creatures that inhabited these woods.
As Susan jogged along the trail, she noticed a dark shape ahead, initially mistaking it for a bear. She knew the drill with black bears -make noise, appear larger, and have bear spray ready. As she prepared to confront the supposed bear, something seemed abnormal.
The creature began to rise, not on four legs like a bear, but on two. Her heart raced as she realized that this was no ordinary animal. It was massive, covered in coarse, dark hair, and as it turned to face her, its human-like visage sent shivers down her spine. It had a flat mouth, a prominent brow, and deep, black eyes – a face, unlike any creature she had ever seen.
Fear gripped her, but before she could react, the creature emitted a bone-chilling scream that reverberated through the mountains. Susan was paralyzed with terror, unable to discern which way would lead her to safety. She knew she couldn’t outrun this unnatural being.
The creature studied her. It towered over her, its breath like a gust of wind, as it inhaled and exhaled. Susan’s thoughts went suddenly to those of her family, realizing that she might never see them again. Desperate, she flicked the safety off the top of the bear spray while praying that the creature would leave her and return to the forest.
As if the creature could read her thoughts, the creature turned and slowly retreated into the woods, leaving Susan shaken, bewildered, but unharmed. She knew her prayer was heard and she was spared.
From the day forward, Susan’s life was forever changed. She respected the land and the creatures that inhabited it with a newfound reverence. She knew she had witnessed something beyond human comprehension, the guardian of the mountains let her see there are many beings that can hurt you in this world. She would carry the memory of this encounter with her to remind her that life is fragile and uncertain, but that prayer can change circumstances that seem hopeless.
